The California Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Act of 2016 created the Lead-Acid Battery Cleanup Fund by imposing a $1 fee on battery manufacturers for each lead acid battery1 they sell2 in the state of California (the “Manufacturer Fee”), and a separate $1 fee collected at the point of sale (the “California Battery Fee”). The Legislature increased both the Manufacturer Fee and the California Battery Fee to $2 each starting April 1, 2022.
Additional information, including how retailers should register with the state and remit collected fees, is available from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.
